The manifold absolute pressure sensor measures the intake manifold pressure, providing intake manifold pressure information to the Engine Control Unit (ECU). This data is used by the ECU to calculate air density, determine air fuel mixture for the combustion process, measure engine load, fuel injection pulse and adjust ignition timing.
In addition to these primary uses, the sensor data can also be used to diagnose throttle performance issues, detect a vacuum leak in the intake manifold, and convert the sensor signal into air mass data by referring to engine speed and intake air temperature (IAT). Furthermore, in OBD II cars, the MAP sensor is used to test the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve, and as a backup for vehicles with a mass airflow sensor (MAF), which measures air density and volume, to monitor the EGR valve.
When the pressure sensor malfunctions, the common causes include contamination, clogging, electronics damaged from intense engine heat, and vibration damage from prolonged exposure in the engine compartment.
