A Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) senor is used to measure the intake manifold pressure. This device is commonly found close to or on the throttle body, within the inlet manifold. It’s main purpose is to inform the Engine Control Unit (ECU) of the intake manifold pressure, in return allowing the ECU to calculate the air density and accordingly determine the correct air-fuel mixture needed for the combustion process. The MAP sensor also helps the ECU calculate engine load, fuel injection pulse, and adjusts engine ignition timing in return.
Furthermore, the MAP sensor can also be used to diagnose performance problems related to the throttle.
